Story: Tears in my eyes begins with Rebecca (Kate Henshaw Nuttal) getting dressed by her sister Lizzy (Thelma Okoduwa) and friends for her wedding with Donald (Scot Robert), having gotten ready they drive to the church. As she is about to declare her marital vows, she collapsed and is rushed to the hospital
Greg (Ramsey Nouah) is being persuaded by his father Dike (Ashley Nwosu) and mother Eunice (Ngozi Ezeonu) to marry a lady they have picked for him as wife. He bluntly refused and tells them he is not in a hurry to pick a wife. On his way to his house, he meets Rebecca lying on the road in her wedding gown. He stops to find out what the matter is and she seeks his help. This he does by taking her to his house. At first, she refuses to speak a word to him after imploring his help. Later on she breaks her silence but still refuses to tell Greg anything other than her name which she claims is "Joy". Greg notices strange things about her like how she manages to get hold of some clothings in his possession which he didn’t give to her.
Two weeks later, he takes her out and demands to know more about her. This results in an argument and she walks out on him. Greg gets back home to meet her inside the house shut before leaving earlier. She insists that the door was open when she came home and they leave it at that. She then expresses her intention to move out of Greg’s home because of his constant nagging about her background. To this he apologized and begged her to stay.
Greg’s fiancée Loretta (Jennifer Serrano) comes home one day to meet Lizzy in Greg’s house. She has an argument with both "Joy" and Greg and then leaves with a promise that Greg will regret his actions. Greg goes into the house and apologizes for Loretta’s actions. He tells Joy that he loves her and makes advances at her which she refuses. Days later, they both go shopping and they run into Greg’s friend and former classmate Nancy in the supermarket. Out of jealousy, she walks out on him and goes to wait for him in his car. He comes out of the supermarket to meet her sitting in the car which he locked and has the keys. She insists on meeting the door open and Greg does not push it further.
One day, they go out to a drinking spot where Greg is supposed to meet with his friend
Dan (Collins Onwochei) and Dan’s friend Mike (C. J. Akpofure) with whom Greg is to transact business. Greg introduces "Joy" to Mike but Mike claims he knows her as Rebecca. After a slight argument, they decide that Rebecca is a look alike of "Joy"
Back home, Greg revisits the issue of "Joy’s" background. "Joy" explains to him that she is from Esan in Edo State. Her father intends to use her in settling an old debt, details of which she does not want to go into, by marrying her off to a Seventy year old man who already had five wives. She and her mother pleaded with her father to no avail. Then she insisted on a church wedding which was accepted. Then she planned her escape with the driver who was to take her to church who dropped her off at an appropriate place where a vehicle was waiting for her which she used in escaping. Greg at first does not trust her, but later believes her story.
They decide to get married but face the challenge of tradition. Greg takes "Joy" to meet his family and his father kicks against being part of a marriage to which he does not know the brides background. Greg walks out on his parents and decides to go ahead with the wedding.
Greg and "Joy" both go shopping in preparation for their upcoming wedding where they run into the attendant Uche (Angela Phillips) who recognizes "Joy" but is too shocked for words to say anything. Greg quickly intervenes by telling her she is looking at the wrong person.
On the proposed day of the wedding, everything is set, as "Joy" approaches the church, she faints and is rushed to the hospital. When she comes out of the coma , she requests to see her husband to be but when he gets to her bed side, they meet that she’s disappeared. When Greg gets home, he meets that she has disappeared from all the pictures he has of her.
Greg explains his predicament to his friend Dan. He tells him, for the first time, how he met "Joy" and all that has been happening between them. He even goes ahead to show him the picture where she disappeared from. Dan advised him to move out of his house for fear of being harmed by "Joy" which he refused. They both decide to pay Mike a visit. On getting there, Mike explains that he only knows Rebecca or "Joy" from a distance as she was supposed to get married to his friend Donald. But Donald who is in a better position to tell them about her is no longer in the country as he traveled after the failed marriage.
The intrigues in the movie is a must watch for any movie enthusiast who has a knack and nose for a good movie.
REVIEW
Story: Tears in my Eyes is an interesting story though one does not see how the title relates to the story. The story opens with the wedding of Rebecca to Donald. It was astonishing to discover only eight people in the church. Rebecca, Donald, her parents, Lizzy, two friends and the pastor. The groom had no relative present. "Joy" narrates to Greg how she was forced into a marriage with a 70 year old man who already has five wives. She then insisted on a church wedding which was later formalised. But then i it possible to have a wedding involving a ploygamist blessed by priests in a church ? Another question is, where did "Joy" get the friends who dressed her up for her second wedding? Greg and his friend Dan decide to trail Uche. They don’t show her getting into a cab, they don’t show her alighting. Instead, they show the car following her behind like she was being escorted. When things get to a head, Dan promises to take Greg to a prophet. But the prophet looked more like a witch Doctor because of his appearance and constant recital of incantations in his shrine. At the end of the flick, a suicide note written by Lizzy is found, but nothing is said of the content.
Technicalities: Everything concerning technicalities in the movie was on the average.
Language: The language spoken throughout was English. The only problem is that Greg (Ramsey Nouah) sounded more foreign to the extent that it was difficult understanding his speech.
Conclusion: Tears in my Eyes is an interesting movie save for some loopholes in the story line..
