AKINYULI
Pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, the Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo Youth Mandate, has warned the Arewa Youths Forum and the Northern Caucus of the House of Representatives on what it described as unwarranted attacks on the Minster of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyinli, over her stand on the current political situation in the country. Rising from an emergency meeting in Owerri, the Imo State capital, the group in a communiqué signed by the national president, Gabriel Nwambu and the national secretary, Comrade Victor Kalu and others said Prof Akuyinli had rendered what it described as selfless service to the nation and, therefore, should be commended rather than being condemned. The group stated that both the Northern elements in the Federal House of Representatives and the Arewa Youths Forum were misguided ethnic jingoists, manipulated by some cabals to fan the ember of disunity among Nigerians on an issue which hitherto bore no ethnic or religious colouration. The Igbo group stated that the actions of the Hausa Fulani and their “stooge†in the House of Representatives were calculated to once again partition Nigerians into ethnic and religious cleavages, rake up crises and continually reap from the crises while the entire nation continues to suffer. It demanded immediate retraction of the advertorial credited to the Arewa Youths Forum and what it termed the shameful comments credited to the Northern caucus of the House of Representatives calling for the resignation of Prof Akuyinli. The group called on the leadership of the House to call its members to order, noting that they were elected to not only make laws for peace, order and good governance of the Nigerian state, but were expected to be above board, have a national and global view on issues rather than promoting ethnic and sectarian tension in the country, adding that the leadership of Arewa Consultative Forum, the elders and religious leaders of the North should respect the historical alliance with the East and therefore call these elements to order immediately. The group stated unequivocally that the tribal jingoists and their sponsors in the North should note that no section of the country had the monopoly for gangsterism and that no geographical zone benefited more than the other in “our having a united Nigeria. All are equal beneficiaries and shall be equal losers if the nation is troubled.â€
