Jurgen Klinsmann has tipped Germany for glory at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, and claimed the insecurity over the future of current coach Joachim Low, his successor, will not affect the players.
Speaking in the Bild newspaper, the 45-year-old talked up his country’s chances of success, despite witnessing their 1-0 defeat by Argentina last week.
“We can still win it,” Klinsmann said. “I think the Germany team is one of the favourites, together with several others, including Argentina. However, the top candidate for me is Spain.”
Klinsmann was in charge of Germany on home soil at the last FIFA World Cup. He, like Low, had a contract which was expiring and only days after guiding the team to victory over Portugal in the third-place play-off, the former striker decided to leave his position.
Many are now predicting the same with Low should he be equally successful, but Klinsmann does not see similarities with his own personal situation four years ago. “I had turned down any negotiations before the World Cup, but this time the negotiations did take place, they just didn’t go favourably,” he explained.
“But when the national team meets in May for tournament preparations that no longer plays a role for the players or the coach. The way the tournament goes will be decisive and then the public, the DFB (German Football Association) bosses and the coach himself will get a chance to judge.”
Klinsmann would like to see Low stay on as coach after the tournament, though.
“I hope so,” he added. “Jogi and his training team are the ideal solutions. I hope all of the contracts are extended after the World Cup.”
