The Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has revealed it will soon establish a microfinance bank to secure the future of both serving and retired journalists. The Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Wahab Oba, said recently that the council had inaugurated a committee to develop a blueprint on the establishment of the microfinance bank. He said the committee will work towards getting the bank’s operating licence from the CBN and that this will be followed by the commencement of operations. Oba said all media houses in the country will be encouraged to own shares in the microfinance bank when it kicks off operations soon. He said the microfinance bank is necessary to address critical financial issues and secure the future of journalists in the country. He said that “we discovered that many of our members retire into penury and without any means of livelihood.†He said many of the retirees had worked hard during their active days and had put in everything to enhance the profession. Oba said journalists have no job security and that this makes it necessary for the council to secure their future.
