The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has called for caution while discussing issues bothering on the long absence of President Umar Yar’ Adua from the country, insisting the development is explosive which should be handled with maturity and with the interest of the nation at heart. The permanent Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, however, said royal fathers in the South-West would soon make definite pronouncement on the issue. His words, “Royal fathers with like minds in the South-West are discussing President Yar’ Adua’s issue especially as it affects the nation among ourselves and very soon we shall make our stand known. The issue at hand is explosive which should be handled with maturity and interest of the nation at heart. In Yoruba land, monarchs just don’t comment on issues anyhow. They wait, observe events and gauge the feelings of their subjects before coming out to take a stand. But I can assure you, very soon, royal fathers in the South-West especially those with like minds will make their stand known on the development.†The monarch, who made the declaration in Oyo Town shortly after inspecting projects being executed by Atiba Local Government Area where his son, Akeem is the chairman, said he believed current development in the country required that everybody should join hands to ensure that democracy works. “I ensure I inspect projects being executed for the people in my domain for what I am after is their welfare. I believe traditional institutions in other councils should monitor what goes on in their respective councils too. This will make council chairmen to be on their toes and ensure that they take care of the welfare of the people they govern. This will definitely ensure development of grassroots areas, irrespective of system of government being practised,†the royal father said. The Alaafin implored political office holders to always remember that they were elected to protect the interest of the electorate, urging them to execute programmes that would benefit the electorate and improve on their status. “You were elected to take care of the electorate and you should ensure that programmes being executed have direct bearing with people of your community and improve on their status,†he advised. The Alaafin who also inspected the area earmarked for the construction of the new 1.5 kilometre road for the people of the ‘Oke olola’ community in the ancient town, insisted that he would always strive for the development of the town.
