Former president Shehu Shagari says he is impressed with the leadership style of Governor Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano State and wants the governor to keep the spirit alive.
The former president who received Governor Shekarau at his country home in Sokoto said he had been following with keen interest the activities of Governor Shekarau since his assumption of office and was pleased with him.
Alhaji Shagari maintained that “those within and outside his party are all commending his efforts. This is a thing of pride to us”.
He remarked that he was particularly happy that the “Sardauna” title was conferred on Malam Shekarau, urging him to live by the principles which the late Sardauna of Sokoto stood for.
Said he: “Please try to emulate the late Sardauna. As one of the few who knew him and worked with him, we shall give advice when needed toward achieving the set goals”. Shagari thanked the Kano Emirate council for finding Governor Shekarau worthy of the title.
In his remarks, Governor Shekarau who said the visit was to thank the elder statesman for gracing the Sardauna Kano turbanning ceremony described Alhaji Shagari as a tolerant leader who worked amicably with the opposition while he was the president.
Governor Shekarau who compared Shagari’s tenure with that of the PDP federal government lamented that the relationship between the executive and the legislature under the PDP had been rough.
He concluded that the unfortunate development which he described as a national embarrassment did not go down well with well - meaning citizens like former President Shagari who are determined to move the country forward.
Malam Shekarau, therefore, praised the former president for his statesmanship and commitment to making Nigeria a better place for all.
